⚡ Mileage rate rose 45p → 55p for 2026/27 - first rise since 2011. Most drivers haven't heard.

The gig driver's tax spreadsheet that checks its own maths.

Track every platform, log every mile at the new 55p rate, and watch your real tax figure build all year - in an Excel template that verifies its own calculations against hand-checked HMRC worked examples, live, every time you open it.

Eight hand-verified worked examples recompute against the live formulas. If anything ever disagrees - a tampered cell, a wrong rate - every tab turns red and tells you not to trust the numbers. We've looked at the UK tax templates on the market - most flag your data entry; we haven't found another that checks its own engine like this.

MTD prep & SA103 mapping · Full edition

Quarterly totals laid out cleanly for Making Tax Digital - works with HMRC-recognised bridging software or your accountant - plus a year-end map to every Self Assessment box.

It also stops you making the classic mistake.

Claiming mileage AND fuel/repairs is double-claiming - the error that gets returns flagged. This template's expense list won't let you: on the mileage method, vehicle running costs are blocked with a plain-English explanation. Try finding a template that protects you instead of just adding up whatever you type.

Fair questions

Does this file my return to HMRC?

No - no spreadsheet can. It keeps MTD-compatible digital records and produces clean figures for each stage: type your year-end totals into HMRC's free Self Assessment portal, or send quarterly MTD updates via your accountant or HMRC-recognised bridging software. What it removes is the year of chaos before that moment.

Do I need Microsoft 365?

No. The dashboard, the tax calculation and the self-test all run on standard Excel formulas that work in any recent version - Excel 2016 or later. Microsoft 365 adds one thing on top: a second, independent recalculation of the maths using newer LAMBDA functions, as an extra cross-check. On older Excel that bonus check simply sits idle - your figures and the eight self-tests are unaffected.

What happens next April?

This is the 2026/27 edition - rates verified against official sources, with the source links inside the workbook. You get free updates for this tax year via Gumroad. Next tax year is a new edition, because the rates will be new (this year's 45p→55p change is exactly why editions matter).

I'm in Scotland - does it work for me?

Yes. Scottish Income Tax bands are built in and selected with one setting - one of the eight self-tests specifically proves the Scottish calculation diverges from the rest-of-UK one correctly.

What's the difference between Lite and Full?

Lite (free) gives you the full tracker, the live tax estimate, the tax jar and the self-test - enough to know your number all year. Full (£9.99) adds the filing-season tabs: HMRC income reconciliation, quarterly MTD prep, and a year-end map to every Self Assessment box. Same verified engine in both. The GigJar App is free to track - mileage and the live tax estimate all year - and only £59/tax year when you actually file. It automates the lot and includes the Full Spreadsheet.

Does it work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets - the whole workbook, including the self-test, recalculates natively. No Microsoft account or Office needed.

Is this tax advice?

No - it's organised figures and estimates based on HMRC's published rates. For anything complex or personal, speak to an accountant; the template's SA103 mapping makes their job (and their bill) smaller.
